The Bad Uglies ride again

Google's blog today has an excellent entry about the types of attacks the bad guys are using these days - and what they're doing about it in their search engine.

"Google works closely with the security community to identify malware on the web and then share that information more broadly. We've set up a number of automated systems to scour our index for potentially dangerous sites, and we add a label to those that appear to be a vehicle for malware. If you're searching on Google and click on a link that we've flagged, a warning page will appear before you move forward."

They also point to an excellent web site that tells you a lot of what you might need to know about how to tell if your system is infected and how to get rid of the infection, as well as hints and tips on identifying problem sites and how to report them too.

One of the outfalls of Google's decision to start flagging bad sites is that it now makes sense to use them to initially go to almost any site - put the URL into Google's search bar and when the list of "sites" shows up - you'll see whether Google thinks their web site is compromised - and if you accidentally click on the link anyway, you'll get a warning page first - sort of a double chance of staying away from bad places.

Seems like a good idea to me - and although it means one more click on the path to sites, that just may save your bacon.
