A Song In Our Hearts - and In The Air - Thanks Mark!

Musings on life

All day today I've heard and seen the news talking about the wonderful actions and reactions of the Canadian public in the past 17 days. Just this hour I watched VANOC CEO John Furlong talk about how incredible the Canadian public has been - including their singing the Canadian National Anthem at the drop of a hat...

but nobody has thanked Mark Donnelly for getting the Canadian public primed for the Olympics!!!

Mark Donnelly hands the microphone over to the Canucks' audience to sing the Canadian National AnthemYou see, Mark has taken to "handing the mic" over to the crowd at Vancouver Canuck games for the past couple of seasons - and it has taken off. Many other Canadian teams' fans are starting to sing along too - and now it seems we have a movement.

Thanks Mark!

Now we have a chance at competing with our neighbours to the South in patriotism and spontaneous flag waving and anthem singing. Our showing at the 2010 Olympics sure has them (the US) quaking in their song-filled boots :)

You're right, Richard. "O Canada" has been a popular song in Vancouver for some years now. Yes, we should thank Mark, because the spontaneous singing of our national anthem at Olympic events and on the streets was undoubtedly started by Vancouver residents. I can well imagine one of them being my brother Rob, who works downtown, and who has been singing "O Canada" to his children every night at bedtime. They are now 6 and 8, and it's still their most-requested lullaby. These two little Canadian patriots didn't have to look far for Canadian flags to take to an Olympic hockey game... they had lots left over from their Canada Day party last year. Because I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, I have been lip-synching every time I've attended an event where O Canada has been sung, so as not to offend the ears of people nearby. But what of those people nearby? They should have been singing their hearts out but, if they were singing at all, they were mumbling. Maybe from now on it will be different. Maybe everyone else will sing, and I will feel free to mumble.

Thanks, Richard, and thanks again, Mark.
